Haha, thanks! I am!
Ah, missed vim-test there. I played around with a setup like that over tmux a couple of years back. I’d love to see more of your setup, maybe that’d be a nice blogpost (if you haven’t written that already)?
Ha! Looking through your config, I noticed I haven’t even set up a leader key yet. I guess \ it is for now. 🤣
Loving that Tagbar and color scheme! I noticed vim-dispatch in there, do you run your tests from Vim inside :terminal
?
I’m on NeoVim, which has sensible defaults out of the box, by the way. On Vim 8, I’d have to configure it to actually behave like an editor first.
I threw out my Vim configuration to start over again.
Here’s here’s my ~/.vim, if you’d like to follow along while I add configuration back. It’s working surprisingly well so far, actually.
Any recommendations for a webcam and microphone for giving live online lectures? Could a clip-on mic work well? Any specific products you’d recommend? Asking for a friend.
Happy holidays from my dentist! 🦷🎄
Good luck tonight! 🪓🎸🤘
Thanks! Hadn’t heard of that one yet. A good book on maintaining software is always welcome. I’ll put it on the list!
I’m off Twitter for what? A year, maybe. Now Fleeting is all the rage, apparently. “Fleets”, I tell you! Sheesh! 👨🦳
Ha, that’s a great suggestion indeed! I’ve bumped Foundation #1 up on my endless reading list. The length of the series always made it feel a bit daunting to get started on it. 😬
Found the laptop that had a a bunch of unpushed commits to my blog’s got repository, so I can finally update it again.
Remember to actually push those commits, kids!
Feel free to suggest non-classics, books about very specific topics, or books that aren’t about programming. Not a programmer, or haven’t been programming for a long time? I’d particularly like to hear from you!
Programmers! Which book(s) would you recommend to anyone who does whatever you do, and why? Or; which book do you wish you’d read sooner? Or; what’s the book you wish everyone you work with had read?
It’s New Year’s resolutions time. 🕺
I’ll start with “Test-Driven Development by Example” for its clear explanation of automated testing to drive development. It helped me gain the courage to tackle difficult programming problems, even if I didn’t know what the result would look like.
“The values of numerals are the numbers that they name”
This stuff is so much better out of context.
This, definitely. I do think closing the client for a while, and having DND on all day fixes some of these issues, but having to manage unread doesn’t really work. Maybe Slack’s email notifications can help with those?
Vim has a gatekeeping problem.
I’ve been told using MacVim wasn’t the way, moving using the arrow keys was bad, that using a pre-made plugin setup was dumb. Enthusiastic articles about my setup have been roasted on the internet.
I’ve been part of the problem. I’ve told people not to bother because it’s quicker to learn any other editor. That’s not nice, and it misses the point.
If you have a thing for arcane software, Vim might be your thing. Tinkering with it, uncovering its secrets, and understanding its weirdness is some of the most fun I had on a computer.
I’d say give it a shot, and let me know if I can help.
Ah, yes. Do Not Disturb is a great suggestion indeed, especially because of allowing messages to be forced through. I’m trying that now instead of turning the whole thing off. I’ll probably minimise the app and check it periodically too. 🤔
I’ll probably end up turning off notifications as well, indeed. Maybe even badges too, and check Slack between tasks or something like that. 🤔
Here’s what I do occasionally. I’ll turn the app off completely so I don’t accidentally check anyway. That works, but I still have to remember to turn it on.
Turns out they did glow in the dark all along. 🤩
That’d save me from having the icon in my dock. I wonder how that would work having the pinned tab in each browser window, though.
I’m starting to wonder if most of my issues are actually caused by me actively checking Slack than being notified by it. 🤔
ah, that’s smart indeed. I have the badges on, but only get notifications when I’m directly mentioned now. I tend to switch to Slack throughout the day, though, which I think causes most of the distraction.
You’re right! That’s been working for me with e-mail for years, so that sounds like a good idea. I’m not sure about the DMs, though. I’d still kind of want to let them go through. 🤔
